Mark Andrew Cleveland asked for a piece for a recital at St. Paul's, and I thought it would be good to use a text from a poet on the faculty, Dan Hare. It was so much fun recreating the sound of the painting, that I immediately looked for more first-person artist poems to similarly set. And who could resist calling a set of songs "artsongs"?
